Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

Effective date: September 3, 2026

Under the federal No Surprises Act, health care providers must give patients who do not have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the expected cost of medical items and services before those services are provided. This is called a Good Faith Estimate.

What you are entitled to

• You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency item or service, including related costs such as tests, procedures, equipment and facility fees.
• You can ask for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time.
• Make sure the estimate is in writing, and keep a copy or a picture of it.

When we provide it

• If you schedule a service at least three business days in advance, we provide the estimate no later than one business day after scheduling.
• If you schedule at least ten business days in advance, we provide it no later than three business days after scheduling.
• If you ask for an estimate without scheduling, we provide it within three business days of your request.

If the bill is higher than the estimate

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. You must start the dispute within 120 calendar days of the date on the bill. Information on how to dispute a bill, and the forms to do it, are at cms.gov/nosurprises or by calling 1-800-985-3059.
