The term gets used loosely in medical marketing, so it is worth being precise.
Hospital privileges are a formal grant of authority to admit and treat patients at a specific facility. They are not automatic and they are not permanent. A physician applies, the hospital’s credentialing committee verifies training, board certification, licensure, malpractice history and references, and privileges are then granted for defined procedures and renewed on a cycle.
Full privileges, as distinct from courtesy or consulting privileges, means the ability to admit patients and act as the attending physician rather than only to visit or advise.
The reason this is worth knowing is that it is independently verifiable, and it represents a review of a physician’s credentials by an institution with its own reasons to be careful. It is a useful thing to ask any specialist about, whoever you end up seeing.

Office procedure suite — the overwhelming majority of interventional pain treatment. Epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, diagnostic blocks, radiofrequency ablation, trigger point injections and hydrodissection are performed under local anesthetic with light sedation, take well under an hour, and you go home the same day.
Hospital setting — reserved for situations where the patient rather than the procedure drives the decision. Significant cardiac or respiratory disease, anticoagulation that complicates matters, a need for deeper sedation, or a procedure where the safest answer is an operating room and an anesthesia team.
Being on staff at Anderson means that judgment can be made on clinical grounds rather than on whether the physician has anywhere to send you.
Consultations, diagnostic blocks and image-guided procedures take place at our Missouri offices — 4477 Woodson Road, St. Louis, where the fluoroscopy suite is installed, or 12174 Natural Bridge Road, Bridgeton. From Maryville that is roughly a half-hour drive, usually I-55/70 west to I-270, then south toward the airport.
A half-hour drive each way is not trivial when you are in pain, so we try to compress the sequence rather than spreading it across visits.
Where a diagnostic block is clearly indicated and you want to proceed, it can frequently be performed the same day as your consultation instead of requiring a second trip.
