What whole body infrared therapy is

Infrared therapy delivers radiant heat that penetrates tissue rather than warming only the skin surface. Unlike a heating pad, which conducts heat inward from the outside and reaches only a few millimeters, infrared energy is absorbed through a greater depth of tissue.

Ours is delivered from a dedicated whole-body table rather than as a local applicator. That distinction matters for patients whose pain is widespread rather than confined to one area — fibromyalgia-type presentations, generalised muscle guarding, and the diffuse stiffness that accompanies long-standing chronic pain.

It is a supportive modality. We use it to make other treatment possible rather than as a treatment in its own right.

What the warmth actually does

Three effects matter clinically. Heat causes local vasodilation, increasing blood flow to the tissue being warmed. It reduces muscle tone, which is why guarded, protective muscle spasm often releases during a session. And it increases the extensibility of connective tissue, meaning collagen stretches further and with less force when it is warm.

That last point is the practical one. Stretching cold, guarded tissue is uncomfortable and largely ineffective. Warming it first changes what physical therapy can accomplish in the same session.

How we use it

Most often immediately before physical therapy or a procedure, so that treatment is better tolerated and more productive. Also for patients whose widespread muscle guarding is limiting their ability to move at all, where the first task is simply to reduce protective tone enough to begin.

It combines well with whole body vibration for building load tolerance, and with photobiomodulation where inflammation is also a factor.

What to expect, and who should be cautious

Sessions are comfortable and passive. You will sweat, and you should drink water afterwards. There is no downtime.

Caution applies where heat is a risk rather than a benefit: impaired sensation, including advanced diabetic neuropathy, because you may not feel excessive heat; acute injury within the first 48 hours, where heat worsens swelling; active infection; and significant cardiovascular disease, where the circulatory demand of whole-body heating matters. Tell us your full history.

Make Treatment Easier To Tolerate

Warming tissue before therapy changes what a session can achieve. Call to ask whether it fits your plan.

Infrared Therapy FAQs

A heating pad conducts heat inward from the skin surface and reaches only a few millimeters. Infrared energy is absorbed through a greater depth of tissue, and a whole-body table treats diffuse pain rather than one area.

The physics overlap, but this is a clinical table used for a defined purpose within a treatment plan, at controlled parameters, and sequenced deliberately with therapy or a procedure.

Yes. Drink water afterwards. Tell us if you are on a diuretic or have any condition affecting fluid balance.

Anyone with impaired sensation who may not feel excessive heat, including advanced diabetic neuropathy; acute injury in the first 48 hours; active infection; and significant cardiovascular disease.

Typically twenty to thirty minutes, usually scheduled immediately before therapy or a procedure so the effect is put to use rather than wasted.
