Hinged Knee Brace for Knee Pain

A hinged knee brace uses stiff side bars joined by hinges at the joint to hold a painful knee steady and cap how far it bends during healing. At the Padda Institute in St. Louis we fit it to your leg and lock the hinges to the range your physician ordered.

Your physician orders this equipment as part of our physician-directed physiotherapy program. We fit it, coach you through using it, and send you home with the steps in writing.

What is a hinged knee brace?

A brace with stiff side bars and hinges that sit at the knee joint. It is fitted to your leg, with the hinge range set by your physician’s order.

How does it help with pain?

It steadies a painful knee and caps how far it bends during healing, so the knee is less likely to buckle on steps or rough ground.

How should it fit and feel?

Snug straps and firm support. Each time you put it on, the hinges should sit at the center of the knee.

How do you use and look after it?

Strap it snug but not tight, so two fingers slide beneath each strap. Leave the hinge settings for us to change. Look over your skin daily and wipe the brace down with a damp cloth.

When should you call us?

How long does it take?

Wear it as your physician ordered.

Before you head home, you demonstrate that you can put it on, work it and remove it. Call (314) 481-5000 if it causes pain, fits wrong or stops working.

What to remember

  1. Hinges sit at the center of the knee.
  2. Leave the hinge settings alone.
  3. Cold, blue, numb or swollen toes: call.

Show us you have it: Put the brace on and line up the hinges while we watch. If any part is unclear, ask, and we will walk through it again at your next visit.
